DNC chair threw phone in frustration as strains for Democrats show ahead of midterms, report says

The Democratic Party’s national office is reportedly wracked by internal politics, an unsteady leader and deep financial problems even as Democratic politicians nationwide appear to be on an upswing.A new report from The New York Times out Sunday detailed the sheer scale of the party’s debts and financial burdens, which this past year included a major multimillion-dollar buyout of Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign donor email list. It also painted an image of a brutal work atmosphere where the boss, Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, is reportedly petrified of losing his job, certain his doom is prewritten, and surrounded by a shrinking number of loyalists.

In particular, the Times report revealed an incident that is alleged to have occurred earlier this month, during a heated discussion between Martin and a junior staffer. During the conversation, Martin is reported to have “thrown” his phone onto the staffer’s desk, in a manner described as not aimed at the staffer themself. It wasn’t immediately clear, from the Times’s reporting, whether the staffer was seated at the desk or standing nearby when the “upbraiding” occurred, but the incident was described to the newspaper by six sources.

Martin later met with human resources personnel over the incident, according to the Times, but it was not clear if he was formally disciplined in any way.The paper further described the accounts of the incident as varying in their judgement of how hard Martin threw the phone, and none of the sources reportedly witnessed the incident firsthand.DNC press officials declined to comment to the Times regarding the incident, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Independent.

The midterm elections are just over three months away, and the party is making a play at retaking majorities in both houses of Congress after suffering a crushing defeat in 2024 alongside Harris’s defeat, handing unified control of government over to Republicans aligned with Trump’s second administration. After a year and a half of that administration in power, Democrats have retaken advantages across all available polling, including on generic ballot surveys, issue-based polling and general election matchup gauging.

A Fox poll released this past week showed the party winning voters by a slim margin on the issue of immigration, signalling Americans’ deep discontent with the White House’s deportation strategies, while Democrats held clear advantages on a host of other issues including the most important two: the economy and inflation.open image in galleryDonald Trump's war with Iran is causing a major enthusiasm problem among GOP voters, new polling finds (PA Wire)Meanwhile, a Washington Post report out Sunday reveals a major enthusiasm problem sapping Republican strength ahead of the midterms, where one in five “reliable” GOP voters are now considering staying home or even voting Democrat, according to the Koch-linked AFP Action PAC. The group’s surveys revealed high levels of dissatisfaction over the administration’s war with Iran and its effect on gas prices and other sectors of the economy, and a sense of betrayal sinking in across Republican voters which the White House has very publicly denied.

Republicans can afford to lose three seats in the Senate this fall and still cling to a majority within the chamber. But Democrats are rallying and hold advantages in several states where Republican senators currently hold seats, including North Carolina and Ohio. Several others – Maine, Texas and Alaska – are extremely close.

Part of the reason for Republicans’ woes has been the interference of Donald Trump. The president endorsed against two sitting GOP senators this cycle, engineering the defeats of both, and his approval ratings remain hovering near their lowest recorded point across his entire political career. The Post reported that Trump was confronted by a senior Republican senator about his unpopularity and GOP voter enthusiasm issues at a recent meeting in the Oval Office.

Trump reportedly responded by telling the senator that passing the SAVE America Act, a piece of voter ID legislation which is currently the president’s top priority, would solve that issue. Most analysts are unconvinced, and note that polling has shown that more than four in 10 voters are unsure of whether or not they support that bill, a larger share than its supporters or opponents.Join our commenting forumJoin thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their repliesComments
