Woman held for cheating, blackmailing real estate entrepreneur

The Udupi Town Police on Thursday arrested a woman on charges of cheating a real estate entrepreneur in the city to the tune of ₹70 lakh and blackmailing him.Police identified the woman as Zenath Ibrahim, a resident of Kanchinadka near Padubidri. The entrepreneur got in touch with her some time ago, and they jointly opened a real estate office.

He later gave her ₹70 lakh to purchase land.Instead of investing the amount in land, the woman allegedly used it for personal purposes. On realising this, the complainant demanded the return of his money.

Zenath, however, allegedly refused to return the money and blackmailed him, saying she was in possession of obscene videos of the complainant. She also reportedly threatened to kidnap the complainant’s wife and children and kill them. The entrepreneur also alleged that when he was vacating his old office, he found files and pen drives containing private photographs and videos of certain influential persons in the city.

The entrepreneur also named one Sabina Ilyas and others as Zenath’s accomplices and urged the police to initiate a probe. The Udupi Town Police have registered a case under Section 308(6) (aggravated extortion), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 318 (cheating) against the accused.Anyone who was similarly cheated by the accused may approach the Udupi Town Police, the police said in a statement.
