MEXICO CITY — Mexico and England face off in a blockbuster World Cup matchup in the round of 16 on Sunday, July 5.El Tri made history by beating Ecuador in the round of 32 for their first knockout stage win in 40 years. Now, they have an opportunity to make their first quarterfinal in that same time span, but it won't be easy against the Three Lions.
England, however, has not played their best football in this World Cup. They finished atop Group L, but had a scoreless draw with Ghana and struggled against Panama before ultimately taking the lead on a brace by Harry Kane. They were again facing disaster in the round of 32 against DR Congo after conceding an early goal, but survived thanks to more heroics by Kane as he scored the equalizer in the 75th minute and followed it up with the winner shortly after.
Mexico and England will square off at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for a spot in the quarterfinal.Referee Alireza Faghani from Australia will take charge of the match. He will be assisted by his countrymen George Lakrandis and Andrew Lindsay.
