Where Do 76ers Rank Among Free Agency Destinations for LeBron James?
NBA analyst Kevin O'Connor weighed in on where the Philadelphia 76ers rank as a landing spot for LeBron James.
The LeBron James free agency sweepstakes is one of the most competitive in recent memory. This shouldn't come as a surprise given James' fame and talent even at age 41. While not every organization has a serious shot at landing the 22-time All-Star, a handful of teams are seriously in the mix for him, including the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 76ers got James' attention after a blockbuster trade for All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown.NBA analyst Kevin O'Connor recently ranked the 10 best teams James should sign with. O'Connor ranked the 76ers at No.
5, with the Golden State Warriors (No. 4), San Antonio Spurs (No. 3), Cleveland Cavaliers (No.
2), and Minnesota Timberwolves (No. 1) slotting in ahead of Philadelphia. The teams behind the Sixers in O'Connor's list are the New York Knicks (No.
10), Boston Celtics (No. 9), Dallas Mavericks (No. 8), Denver Nuggets (No.
7), and Miami Heat (No. 6).No.
5 feels low for the 76ers in terms of James' potential fit with the team as well as his odds of winning a fifth championship. In Philadelphia, James would have little to no pressure to act as an offensive engine. The Sixers have plenty of scorers in the rest of the players in their starting lineup (Tyrese Maxey, V.
J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid). Where James' talent would benefit the team the most is through his strong playmaking, as he averaged 7.
2 assists last season.Unless the four-time NBA champion still desires a high-profile scoring role, the fit in Philadelphia is seamless. The 76ers are already among title favorites without James, so the addition of him would simply push them over the top.
Their blend of offensive talent, defensive prowess, and athleticism would be unmatched across the association. Not to mention, President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey is doing a solid job bolstering the second unit. The 76ers even hearing their name considered in talks surrounding James is a win, but the hope is undoubtedly to secure a signing from him.
