USA 2-0 Australia: 5 talking points from the USMNT's dominant attacking display | 2026 FIFA World Cup
The USA carried their flying start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a confident 2-0 win over Australia at the Seattle Stadium on June 19 (ET).

× The USA carried their flying start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a confident 2-0 win over Australia at the Seattle Stadium on June 19 (ET). The result secured their place in the Round of 32 with six points from two games, with one still to play. Ad The hosts scored early in the usual way as Folarin Balogun broke down the left wing inside the first quarter hour.
His square ball into the six-yard box saw Cameron Burgess turn it into his own net in the 11th minute to give the Americans a well-deserved lead. The USA extended their lead just before the interval from an unlikely source. Alex Freeman scored their second goal, moving the fastest to head a loose ball into the net from point-blank range.
He was first tagged offside, but a VAR review overturned that decision to hand them the goal. Ad Trending Australia were much better after the break and had more of the ball but rarely troubled Matt Freese in any meaningful way. The Socceroos couldn't find the clinical edge needed to find a way back into the tie.
Without further ado, here are five talking points from another fine USMNT display on home soil: 5) No Pulisic, no problem There was always going to be a Pulisic-shaped hole in this American side during the game, and it hung in the air all afternoon. Mauricio Pochettino had already revealed before kickoff that Pulisic would not be available due to his nagging left calf injury. This was cause for concern, understandably, as Christian Pulisic is one of the squad's most vital players.
Ad In his absence, others like Ricardo Pepi were tasked with working the attack, and he did the job diligently, though he never really set things alight. The USA captain’s electric, unpredictable force in the wide areas was sorely missed throughout the contest. To their immense credit, the Americans never let his absence disrupt their rhythm, and they earned a spot in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
4) Folarin Balogun is full of quality Folarin Balogun looked like the difference-maker for this attacking United States side for the second FIFA World Cup match in a row. He may not get an official assist for the opener, but his searing run and clever pass forced Burgess into that calamitous own goal. Whenever the ball was played in behind, the Monaco striker was a constant menace to Australia’s backline with his movement and pace.
Ad He arguably should have added one of his own after the break but was denied by a superb recovery by Alessandro Circati. Balogun is rapidly becoming the heartbeat of this side and already bagged a memorable brace in the opening win over Paraguay. If the 24-year-old can keep this form going, he could take the USA deep into this FIFA World Cup.
3) The USA have truly emerged as real FIFA World Cup contenders Two games into their FIFA World Cup campaign, the USA have looked sharp, ruthless and full of attacking intent against decent opposition. It’s not exactly easy to advance to the next round with a game to spare on this big stage, and they have done just that. Ad Remarkably, this is the first time since the 1930 FIFA World Cup that the USA have won their first two games.
That momentum, coupled with their obvious quality going forward, makes them contenders. There is a long road ahead, with far tougher tests surely awaiting Pochettino’s men. That said, it would be folly to discount this energetic band as serious outsiders who can go the distance.
2) Australia’s second-half surge The Socceroos were a different proposition after the break, pushing higher and throwing more bodies forward in search of a way back. Australia pressed late, but USA held the frisky visitors scoreless. The obvious question: Where on earth was that intensity and ambition in the first half when the USMNT were racing into a two-goal lead?
Ad Tony Popovic’s men were far too casual early on and were punished for their passive, reactive style of play. Pochettino will be delighted with the clean sheet but might feel his side gave away too much territory and possession in the second half. Whether that was rotation, fatigue or complacency, the Americans can’t afford to let up against better teams.
1) That USA first half masterclass is becoming a trademark in this FIFA World Cup The relentless, high-energy press we loved against Paraguay was in full effect for the opening 45 minutes here. Australia could hardly complete a pass or get on the ball without an American shirt snapping. That suffocating method has now yielded five first-half goals in these two group games for Pochettino’s exciting team.
Three of those came against Paraguay, the other two against the Socceroos. If USA can keep blowing opponents away in the first half, they'll fancy their chances against almost anyone left. Early, ferocious control has quickly become the defining feature of this team’s identity.
They'll just need to pair it with proper game management in the second half, and they're genuinely prepared to face most teams in the FIFA World Cup. × Was this article help
