The Galaxy Z Flip 8 gives off ‘last hurrah’ vibes for $1,199

Skip to main content The Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is clearly the focus of this year’s foldable launch, with the Galaxy Z Flip 8 delivering minor changes and, frankly, feeling like it’s on its way out. Galaxy Z Flip 8 is little more than a marginal refresh to Samsung’s flip phone foldable. It has the same core design, with the welcome change that it’s a tiny bit thinner this year, down to 6.

1mm from its previous 6.5mm. Not nearly as thin as Samsung’s book-style foldables, but when you stack those two on top of each other (13.

1mm), it’s a noticeable change. It’s also lighter at 180g. In the hand, it does feel better, and it’s still way thinner than Motorola’s competing Razr foldables.

Introduced on Flip 7, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 gets Samsung’s bigger cover screen that goes right up to the edges. Samsung has redesigned the UI here as a part of One UI 9, with the cover display getting a new homescreen that features a central widget with your calendar and other contextual information, powered by Now Nudge, as well as an app drawer. Samsung still won’t let you use any app here, but the list has been expanded with many more of Samsung’s own apps supported, including an internet browser.

There are up to 50 apps now supported in “Labs.” Outside of that, you can customize panels with various widgets. Advertisement - scroll for more content And that’s pretty much it.

Galaxy Z Flip 8 has the same 4,300 mAh battery, the same 50MP/12MP rear cameras, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB or 512GB of storage. Snapdragon returns, with Samsung using Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at least in some regions Colors this year include Graphite, White, Pink, and online-only Mint. After trying out the Flip 8 briefly, I’m pretty on board with the idea that this might be Samsung’s last Flip.

That’s the rumor, anyway. The company hasn’t said anything on the matter, nor has it been reported widely. Initial rumblings were sketchy, to say the least, but at least one reliable voice has chimed in.

Whether that happens or not, it’s clear Samsung has run into a bit of a wall with this form factor. It hasn’t been a focus for a while now – despite the Flip being Samsung’s winning form factor initially – and there just haven’t been any new ideas or meaningful changes. That alone feels like a lame reason to just give up, but with the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s new form factor being much more compact in your pocket, maybe now’s the time?

Either way, Galaxy Z Flip 8 is available for pre-order starting today for $1,199. Galaxy Z Flip 8 at Samsung.com Follow Ben: Twitter/X, Threads, Bluesky, and Instagram FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links.
