From Rob-Will to the mysterious Mariano, Dutton Ranch is full of great villains. However, none are as fascinating and layered as Beulah Jackson — though the latest episode may have weakened the antagonist. The Dutton Ranch character is the formidable owner of the 10 Petal Ranch, the legendary South Texas outfit that has existed for 190 years.
The reason it's still standing is largely due to Beulah's ruthless adaptability and her willingness to do anything to ensure the ranch's survival. This commitment to legacy officially makes Beulah the John Dutton replacement of Dutton Ranch, as does the premium she places on loyalty to blood-related family. In episode 7, "Den of Sin," Beulah initially plans to announce her retirement at the 10 Petal's anniversary celebration and name her adopted son, Joaquin, as her successor.
Logically, this makes sense. Joaquin is competent, levelheaded, and deeply devoted to Beulah. She's spent the season lamenting how tired she is, and with Joaquin, she can rest assured that the 10 Petal is in safe hands.
However, that's not what happens. Beulah's biological son, Rob-Will, makes a surprise appearance at the party — after having left rehab early and planned a failed assassination attempt on Joaquin in Dutton Ranch episode 6. He sits Beulah down in her office and demands that she leave him the ranch as his birthright, claiming that he has the family killer instinct that Joaquin, a non-blood relative, lacks.
It doesn't take much convincing for Beulah to acquiesce, and it's a decision that could very well put the almost two-century-old ranch in jeopardy — especially because she collapses at the party almost immediately after announcing Rob-Will as her successor. This impulsive change of heart not only showcases how Beulah shares John Dutton's worst traits as well as his best, but also what she has in common with his daughter. Beulah's Episode 7 Decision Combines Beth's Impulsivity & John's Stubborn Need To Uphold Legacy Between ranch heiress Oreana breaking Carter's heart and now Beulah making this shocking episode 7 move without thinking it through first, these Dutton Ranch characters are more similar to Yellowstone's Beth than the woman herself, who has shown remarkable development and maturity throughout the spinoff series thus far.
However, while Oreana is still quite young and has time to learn from her mistakes, Beulah is playing a risky game. In Yellowstone, Beth would always throw a punch first and ask questions later, and while Beulah herself isn't a violent person, she metaphorically did just that to Joaquin and her ranch by giving it to Rob-Will. In her heart of hearts, Beulah knows that Joaquin doesn't have the underhandedness required to ensure the 10 Petal's survival, but she didn't have to immediately hand the keys to the kingdom over to her biological son right away either.
