It bears repeating: surveys do not vote. People do.

Admittedly, surveys are useful; they provide a snapshot of voter sentiment at a specific moment. They help highlight the issues that matter to Filipinos—food security, job creation, health care, education, and governance. However, a snapshot is not the full narrative.

Between now and 2028, a myriad of debates, policy shifts, and national events will undoubtedly shape and reshape public opinion. To treat today’s data as destiny is to underestimate the Filipino voter. The danger arises when surveys are misused as a “true gauge” of viability.

When voters prioritize “winnability” over conviction, the electoral discourse shifts from “Sino ang karapat dapat?” (Who is worthy?) to “Sayang lang ang boto” (My vote will be wasted).

This mindset suppresses the very power that makes democracy functional: the freedom of informed choice. Article continues after this advertisement Furthermore, early surveys heavily favor name recall, political machinery, and campaign spending. Candidates with the loudest advertisements and deepest pockets naturally lead the polls, regardless of their actual track record or substance.

As citizens, we are not passive consumers of statistics; we are architects of the common good.

We must look beyond the numbers. Before 2028, we owe it to ourselves to scrutinize every candidate: What is your track record? What is your platform?

Who do you truly serve? Surveys cannot answer these; rigorous civic scrutiny can. The 1987 Philippine Constitution reminds us that sovereignty resides in the people.

That sovereignty is not exercised in a polling firm’s office, but inside the precinct on election day. Let us use surveys as tools for information, not instruments of coercion. Let them show us trends, not dictate our choices.

The only poll that truly counts is the one where 70 million Filipino ballots are tallied. To my fellow Filipinos: do not let preelection numbers silence your conscience. Read, listen, question, and vote with conviction.
