Politics Special Team Seeks Custody of Ex-Prosecutor General over Alleged Role in 2024 Martial Law Written: 2026-07-14 10:39:07 / Updated: 2026-07-14 10:40:18 Share Print Photo : YONHAP News A special counsel team investigating allegations from the former Yoon Suk Yeol administration is seeking custody of former Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung over his alleged involvement in Yoon's martial law action in late 2024. The special team said Monday that it had filed for pretrial detention warrants against Shim and Jeon Moo-gon, former head of the planning and coordination unit at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, on charges of playing a key role in the insurrection, power abuse and obstruction of exercise of right. Shim faces accusations of reviewing a potential deployment of prosecutors to a joint martial law investigation headquarters on the night of Yoon's martial law bid on December 3, 2024, upon instructions given by then-Justice Minister Park Sung-jae.
The former chief prosecutor is also suspected of discussing ways to handle criminal cases that would be transferred to the military court under martial law decree, and participating in preparation of a document outlining jurisdictions over trials and investigations. Jeon is alleged to have aided Shim as the prosecution's planning and coordination chief. Shim faces a separate investigation over suspicions that he had instructed against indictment of former first lady Kim Keon-hee regarding various corruption allegations.
