Science Scorching Heat to Continue, Areas in S. Gyeongsang to See Heat Index of 38°C or Higher Written: 2026-07-30 09:30:13 / Updated: 2026-07-30 09:34:44 Share Print Photo : YONHAP News The scorching heat and tropical nights are forecast to continue on Thursday, with regions in South Gyeongsang Province in the country's southeast likely to observe the heat index surge to the life-threatening levels of 38 degrees Celsius or higher. The Korea Meteorological Administration says the heat index in most other parts of the country are expected to reach 33 degrees or higher.

As of 5 a.m. Thursday, the mercury level in Seoul stood at 25-point-six degrees, 29 degrees in Gangneung, 27-point-two degrees in Daegu, 25-point-two degrees in Gwangju, and 27-point-eight degrees on the southernmost Jeju Island.

Daytime highs nationwide are projected to range between 32 degrees and 39 degrees. A heat wave emergency warning, issued when the heat index of 38 degrees or a daytime high of 39 degrees is expected, is currently in place for areas in South Gyeongsang, including Yangsan, Gimhae, Miryang, Uiryeong, and Changnyeong. Tropical nights, where overnight temperatures stay above 25 degrees are expected to continue.
