Skip to main content It’s happening. Samsung has officially adopted silicon-carbon batteries on its latest foldables, though you wouldn’t know that by looking at the spec sheet for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or any other new devices. In multiple press briefings this week, Samsung confirmed to members of the media that the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 are all using silicon-carbon batteries.
Silicon-carbon batteries are well-known right now as the new technology makes it possible to squeeze much higher-capacity batteries into the same size. For other foldables, like the Razr Fold or Honor Magic V6, that means surpassing 6,000 mAh. For Samsung, it just means we’re finally getting a reasonably-sized battery.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 packs a 4,800 mAh battery into a smaller chassis than the Fold 7, which had a 4,400 mAh battery. Z Fold 8 Ultra jumps up to 5,000 mAh despite being thinner than the Fold 7, and both of those feats are likely thanks to silicon-carbon. Performance, longevity, and safety. That last one is probably a big focus, given the scars left from history, but performance and longevity are also important. While silicon-carbon batteries are clearly the way of the future, they’ve only been around for so long, and there are still some rough edges to smooth out.
Samsung also delivered some charging upgrades, with faster 45W charging on both the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra, as well as faster 20W wireless charging. Whether or not Samsung will boost capacity in the future remains to be seen, but that feels inevitable given silicon-carbon’s promise. This is a first step, and I’m personally quite glad we’re finally here.
