Saints bring in a familiar face to try out at QB during minicamp
The road to the NFL hasn't been easy for Hunter Dekkers, but the QB was invited to try out at this week's Saints minicamp after a season in the UFL.
The New Orleans Saints are taking another look at a familiar face as they continue to explore depth options at quarterback ahead of mandatory minicamp. That help is coming in the form of UFL quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who will work out for the team once minicamp commences on Tuesday, per James Larsen of Pro Football Network. The Saints are also working out wide receiver Jalen Moreno-Cropper, Dekkers' teammate on the Houston Gamblers.
Dekkers is an interesting name for the Saints, given their prior ties. New Orleans signed him as an undrafted free agent last offseason after he attended their rookie minicamp. He spent the year on the Saints' practice squad before leaving the team to pursue an opportunity in the spring football league.
The 24-year-old quarterback played in half of the Gamblers' games this season while dealing with a shoulder injury. He completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 749 passing yards and three passing touchdowns.
He added 74 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, which was enough to earn an invitation back to New Orleans to potentially earn a spot on the Saints roster again.Before his professional career, Dekkers' collegiate career was defined by the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. He threw for over 3,000 yards at Iowa State in 2022 before being caught up in a gambling scandal that deemed him ineligible, forcing him to transfer to Iowa Western Community College.
At the helm for the Reivers, he stood out and earned NFL looks.The Saints are set at quarterback for now, with Tyler Shough projected as the starter and Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson serving as Shough's backups. If Dekkers can impress at minicamp, he could earn a spot on the 90-man roster and an invite to training camp later in the summer.
