OK SEOUL, July 8 (Yonhap) -- Senior foreign ministry officials of South Korea and Malaysia held policy consultation talks in Seoul on Wednesday and agreed to enhance cooperation in nuclear energy and other strategic fields, Seoul's foreign ministry said. The consensus was reached during the 10th South Korea-Malaysia Policy Consultation Meeting, attended by First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo and Tan Sri Amran Bin Mohamed Zin, secretary general of Malaysia's foreign ministry, according to the ministry.

"The two countries agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in nuclear energy and other areas to ensure stable supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petroleum products, as well as to enhance regional energy security," the ministry said in a release. The two sides also expressed hope that the free trade agreement (FTA), which the countries are working to sign within this year, will further expand bilateral trade and provide an institutional foundation for broader cooperation in emerging industries, including artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology and green industries. In addition, the officials assessed that cooperation in the defense and arms industry sectors has been advancing based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on defense cooperation, including efforts to launch a joint defense cooperation committee this year, the ministry said.
