Oscar Collazo vs Neider Valdez set for flyweight, world titles not on the line
Oscar Collazo will fight as a flyweight on Saturday
As an update for Saturday night’s Golden Boy main event, Oscar Collazo will not be defending his 105 lb world titles, and in fact, won’t be fighting in that division at all.Taking on late replacement opponent Neider Valdez, who was drafted in on Wednesday to replace Joey Canoy, Collazo will be fighting two divisions up as a flyweight. This does add a little intrigue, perhaps, as obviously Collazo (14-0, 11 KO) hasn’t fought at this weight since his third pro fight in 2021, and that was at a much lower level, obviously, and 105 lb fighters don’t always move up in weight well, even the really good or great ones.
Every fight since then that Collazo has had has been at the 105 lb limit, where he has established himself as the best in the sport and picked up the WBA and WBO world titles.Fear not, though, this doesn’t mean both sanctioning bodies will go without making money off these fighters, as the WBO has graciously put their “International” flyweight title on the line for the bout. The WBA apparently couldn’t come up with some type regional or make believe trinket in time, though that could still change by fight time, I guess.
Valdez (15-3-2, 12 KO) should still be seen as a big underdog, but the 25-year-old Mexican is definitely more familiar with the weight. The actual good reason for this to go on as it is is so that the card didn’t get scrapped and everyone does get paid as scheduled; not just Collazo, but all the undercard fighters, too.Collazo weighed in at 110½ lbs, with Valdez at 111¼, both comfortably under the new 112 lb limit for the bout.
Bad Left Hook will have live results for Collazo vs Valdez starting at 8 pm ET on Saturday night!
