Citing sources familiar with the matter, The New York Times reported Saturday that Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine told Trump during a private meeting the previous day that the U.

S. military could resume major combat operations against Iran but warned that doing so could dangerously deplete the interceptor missile supply available to American forces. The warning came as U.

S. officials expressed concern that an escalation could further drain Patriot missile and other air defense resources stationed across the Middle East. Trump had previously appeared ready to launch a bombing campaign against Iran, telling Axios in an interview Thursday that the United States was considering a major attack and that preparations had been completed.

However, military leaders reportedly cautioned that U.S. forces had limited ammunition reserves to defend American bases in the region, leading Trump to delay the strike plans.

The newspaper reported that the United States has already used more than one-thousand-200 Patriot missiles since the conflict began in April, leaving weapons stocks at concerning levels.
