27, 2026 Nvidia has spent the last few years becoming the most important company in AI. Now it’s apparently trying to become the most important bank in AI, too. A column published on July 27 flagged what it calls “Cloudmaxxing,” a term for Nvidia’s increasingly aggressive strategy of financially undergirding massive data center buildouts.
The concern centers on roughly $600 billion in financing tied to OpenAI and SoftBank’s plans to construct a 10 GW data center campus. The Ohio megaproject and Nvidia’s expanding role The flagship initiative is a planned campus in Ohio that could cost upward of $500 billion. Nvidia is reportedly positioning itself to guarantee approximately $250 billion of that total cost, effectively helping less established developers access cheaper debt by putting its own balance sheet on the line.
Advertisement Back in September 2025, Nvidia entered a $6.3 billion capacity backstop deal with CoreWeave, a cloud computing firm that has become one of its largest non-hyperscaler customers. That deal raised some eyebrows at the time, but $6.
3 billion looks almost quaint compared to the scale now being discussed. Why this matters for the AI supply chain The Breakingviews column specifically flagged that Nvidia’s CEO might be jeopardizing the company’s competitive advantages by extending financial lifelines to less established developers. Google’s capital expenditure demands have been surging, and the broader trend of escalating AI infrastructure investment is straining free cash flow across the sector.
If the companies that can actually afford this buildout are struggling, the ones that need Nvidia’s financial backing to participate are, by definition, in a more precarious position. What this means for investors When a company starts guaranteeing customer financing, it typically does so to maintain volume. Maintaining volume through financial engineering rather than pure product superiority is usually not a signal that pricing power is getting stronger.
The OpenAI-SoftBank partnership represents an enormous bet on a specific vision of AI infrastructure. SoftBank’s track record with large-scale tech investments is uneven — the Vision Fund era produced WeWork. Investors should watch Nvidia’s quarterly filings closely for any disclosure around the structure and scale of these financial commitments.
The $6.3 billion CoreWeave backstop was disclosed. Whether guarantees of this far larger magnitude receive the same transparency will tell you a lot about how seriously Nvidia’s board is taking the risk.
