New law to allow for high school graduates to make $36K salary right away. But there’s a catch
The measure creates an alternate path for Florida high school graduates, given they complete specific educational requirements

A new law in Florida will allow high school graduates to qualify for an insurance customer representative license directly after graduation, offering students a new path into the workforce. The legislation, known as House Bill 1343, alters the existing qualification structure for individuals seeking to work in the insurance sector. Under previous guidelines, applicants were required to hold a degree from an accredited higher education institution with a minimum of nine credit hours in insurance instruction or possess specific professional designations.
The new measure establishes an alternative pathway for anyone with a high school diploma from a Florida school, provided they complete specific educational requirements. To qualify, an applicant must submit their license application to the Florida Department of Financial Services within four years of graduation. Additionally, their high school coursework must include a dedicated class on insurance and personal finance.
To facilitate this requirement, the law instructs the Florida Department of Education to collaborate with the Department of Financial Services to create a new half-credit high school course. The course is scheduled to become available to school districts for the 2027-2028 academic year.
The new curriculum expands upon previous state educational mandates. In 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1054, which requires a basic financial literacy class for ninth-grade students.
While that lower-grade course introduces foundational concepts of personal insurance, the class developed under HB 1343 will require a more comprehensive focus on the industry. Once licensed, individuals can transition into roles where duties include answering customer questions, reviewing accounts and resolving complaints under the supervision of a licensed agent, as outlined by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics.Data from an analysis by ZipRecruiter indicates that the average annual salary for an insurance customer service representative in Florida is $36,176, which translates to approximately $17.39 per hour or $695 per week.
The licensing changes are scheduled to take effect July 1. As reported by FOX 13 Tampa Bay, the legislation is one of nearly 90 new state laws taking effect on that date, covering a range of topics that include traffic regulations, veterans’ affairs, school athletic funding and child care.Join our commenting forumJoin thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their repliesComments
