New headstone for grave of Sheffield Wednesday hero

A headstone was installed at Burngreave Cemetery after a fundraising campaign [Clive Nicholson]A headstone has been installed to mark the grave of the Sheffield Wednesday captain who led the club to its first league title.Ambrose Langley was born in 1870 - just three years after the club was founded - and took the captaincy following its move to Hillsborough in 1899.Under Langley's leadership, the club secured promotion back to the First Division and went on to become League Champions in the 1902–03 season.

He has lain in an unmarked grave at Burngreave Cemetery for more than 30 years, but a new headstone has now been unveiled after two historians led a campaign to raise more than £5,000.Clive Nicholson and Tom Crawshaw, who are related to two of Langley's former teammates, Fred Spiksley and Tommy Crawshaw, took up the cause to make the grave visible.Spiksley was Nicholson's great-great uncle, and while researching his career Nicholson looked into Langley's life.'

Loyal servant'He discovered where he was buried online, but when he visited the Sheffield cemetery found there was no headstone to mark the spot."He's on a corner plot and a lot of the headstones have fallen over around there. "There's a whole row that has been removed at some point, probably for health and safety reasons a load got removed, one being his."

Nicholson and Crawshaw set up a fundraising campaign to replace the headstone, and got permission from a relative of Langley so a new stone could be installed."Ambrose Langley was a loyal servant to Sheffield Wednesday," Nicholson said.A true fan favourite in his playing days, it is wonderful to see today's supporters digging deep, even in challenging times, to fund a new headstone for a player they never saw play, but who they recognise as an important part of the club's history."

As well as providing the headstone, Nicholson and Crawshaw produced a 52-page commemorative booklet celebrating Langley's life and career.Listen to highlights from South Yorkshir
