Environmental activist and speaker Osai Kalidasan has called for public participation in protecting nature.Delivering a talk on Iyarkaiyin Kural (Voice of Nature) at a programme organised by Kalam Ilakkiya Amaippu in Tiruchi on Saturday, he said nature was not merely a resource for human consumption but the very foundation of life. Increasing frequency of heatwaves, natural calamities and biodiversity loss should be understood as nature’s warning to humanity about the consequences of environmental neglect.

Highlighting the intelligence of the natural world, Mr. Kalidasan said every animal had its own unique language and way of communicating. They used sounds, movements and scent marks to communicate with one another and to establish their territories.

Earth is home to more than 8.7 million species, of which human beings are only one. While many other life forms have existed on the planet for over 100 million years, Homo sapiens have been around for only about 300,000 years.

“Other living beings can survive without humans, but humans cannot survive without them,” he said and stressed the need to protect biodiversity and maintain ecological balance.Although very few people would claim to dislike nature, many stopped at merely admiring its beauty. True appreciation of nature lay in actively protecting it through responsible actions and sustainable living.

Members of the forum, students and environmental enthusiasts participated in the event. Published - July 25, 2026 08:44 pm IST Read Comments Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp Reddit READ LATER SEE ALL Remove
