Memory Price Surge Forces Smartphone Makers to Downgrade Entry-Level Specs

A dramatic surge in memory chip prices is forcing Chinese smartphone makers to roll back entry-level device configurations, reversing years of steady spec upgrades. Budget smartphones that had moved to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage as standard are now being redesigned with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage — returning to specifications seen four years ago. According to TrendForce, DRAM contract prices have risen over 40% for two consecutive quarters from Q4 2025 through Q1 2026.

Counterpoint data shows an even starker picture, with all memory categories posting 80-90% sequential price increases in Q1 2026 alone. DRAM, NAND flash, and HBM chips have all hit record highs simultaneously — an unprecedented convergence. Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun publicly described the memory price increases as "crazy" in a social media post, advising consumers to purchase smartphones sooner rather than later, as prices are expected to continue climbing for at least two more years.

The warning from one of China's most influential tech leaders has intensified industry concern about the sustainability of current pricing trends. The impact extends beyond memory configurations. Budget phone makers are also reverting to 1080p LCD panels and older notch designs to maintain price points, sacrificing years of display technology progress.

Mid-range devices face the most difficult trade-offs, as manufacturers must choose between raising retail prices or cutting specifications in other areas to offset memory costs. The memory price rally is driven by a confluence of factors: robust AI infrastructure demand consuming HBM and high-capacity DRAM, constrained NAND supply following industry consolidation, and smartphone makers rebuilding inventory after aggressive destocking in 2024. With AI server demand showing no signs of slowing and memory makers maintaining disciplined capacity expansion, industry analysts expect elevated prices to persist through at least 2027.

For consumers, the short-term outlook means
