Megha Engineering & Infrastructures (MEIL) on Monday said it successfully completed one of the largest monolithic concrete pours in Nuclear Power Corporation of India’s (NPCIL) history for the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) programme at Kaiga Units 5 & 6 Nuclear Power Project, Karnataka. The operation involved the placement of approximately 7,250 m³ of concrete with a rebar density of 360 kg/m³, marking a major construction milestone for Kaiga Units 5 & 6 and for MEIL’s maiden nuclear assignment. Delivering the pour required extensive mobilisation of materials, plant and manpower to maintain uninterrupted quality and schedule, the company said.
Executing a continuous pour of this magnitude on a first nuclear project underscores the company’s engineering capability, detailed planning and execution excellence in one of the most demanding sectors of infrastructure construction, it said, sharing details of the work.According to MEIL, the Kaiga site presented significant environmental and logistical challenges — a remote location with heavy monsoon rainfall and constrained access. The operation demanded precise coordination across batching, transportation, placement, compaction, testing and curing.
Hundreds of engineers, supervisors, quality professionals, surveyors, technicians, operators, safety personnel and skilled workmen worked round the clock, demonstrating commitment, resilience, despite difficult weather conditions and numerous operational challenges. Rigorous safety protocols were followed throughout the operation, and all quality checks and tests were performed in line with nuclear-sector requirements to ensure structural integrity and long-term performance.
