Kerala Crime Branch begins detailed probe into bus driver’s death in Kollam
The District Police Chief (Kollam Rural) says a thorough and transparent probe is under way and strict action will be taken if any police negligence or brutality is uncovered during the investigation

The Kollam District Crime Branch has launched a comprehensive investigation into the death of Siyad (39), a private bus driver who died after being questioned and released by the Kundara police.Siyad, a resident of Perumpuzha, passed away on July 24, 2026 while undergoing treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. He had been taken into custody on June 16 following a complaint regarding missing of two 7th-grade children from his neighbourhood.
Departmental inquiryThe incident gained widespread attention after an audio message by Siyad’s daughter surfaced, alleging that he was brutally assaulted by the police inside the police vehicle. Later, the Home department had sought an official report, prompting the transfer of the case to the District Crime Branch. A departmental inquiry has also been announced against a sub-inspector and civil police officer accused of beating Siyad inside the police jeep.
In response to the accusations, the police maintained that there is no preliminary evidence of custodial torture. According to the police, initial post-mortem examination findings suggest Siyad died from complications related to severe jaundice and pulmonary edema, rather than physical trauma. Officials added that no visible marks of assault were found on his body and the Crime Branch will also investigate whether Siyad was beaten by anyone else after his release from custody.
The District Police Chief (Kollam Rural) said that a thorough and transparent probe is under way. He added that CCTV footage from the police station revealed no signs of assault, and initial medical reports point to a severe heart infection alongside pre-existing Hepatitis C. “However, a complete picture will emerge only after receiving the detailed post-mortem examination report.
Strict action will be taken if any police negligence or brutality is uncovered during the investigation,” he said. Published - July 28, 2026 08:13 pm IST Read Comments Copy link Email Facebook Twitter Telegram LinkedIn WhatsApp Reddit READ LATER SEE ALL Remove
