Jernaro Gilford wants 'swag' for Michigan corners
New Michigan cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford wants his unit to play with confidence and constant competitiveness.
Michigan football has had a solid cornerbacks room for some time, though there were questions the past few seasons about the viability of the room as a whole. This year, there are two returning starters, a transfer in Smith Snowden, and some talented, but unproven, depth pieces behind them, and a new coach who oversees the group.The hope is that Jernaro Gilford, the former BYU cornerback and coach in Provo, will be able to help his unit reach new heights this season.
In a video shared by Michigan football social media on Tuesday, Gilford detailed how he approaches his room and what he hopes to see from them, noting that competitiveness in all things is crucial to having savvy defensive backs."We're going to have a lot of swag, which is just confidence, and a group of guys who are going to dictate the tempo by our physical style of play," Gilford said. "I love guys who are funny, I love guys who are competitive.
I'm talking about it really don't matter what it is. Playing tic-tac-toe video games, who has the best technique, the best hands, regardless, I want guys who are going to be very, very competitive, and at the same time, just be yourself. "I mean, I totally understand that we all grew up different, we all learned things differently.
Again, I think having different guys in that room is what makes us who we are. They know from a coaching standpoint, I'm going to always say touch up coverage, because that's just going to make us do all the small things right, and if we do all the small things right now, that's going to be just making a big play.""The community and everything around Ann Arbor is just a great thing."
