Google might rebrand Pixel Magic Cue as Gemini ‘Proactive Assistance’

Skip to main content With the Pixel 10 series last year, Google introduced Magic Cue to “proactively surface relevant info and suggest helpful actions when you need them.” It now appears that Google is planning to rebrand Magic Cue and put the functionality under the Gemini umbrella. About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store.

When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in case that they do ship.

With that in mind, read on. Beta version 229 of Phone by Google today contains strings that point to this. Magic Cue in the Phone app is codenamed “beacon.”

That functionality is now being referred to as “Proactive Assistance.” <string name=”beacon_proactive_assistance_title”>Get helpful info for this call</string> <string name=”beacon_proactive_assistance_description”>With Proactive Assistance, Gemini can show you useful info from your emails and messages for this call</string> <string name=”beacon_proactive_assistance_button_description”>Get suggestions from Gemini at the right time</string> Gemini is explicitly referenced, with Magic Cue not doing that today even though it’s powered by Gemini Nano. Magic Cue has even maintained its own icon since launch.

The April reference specifically said that the “data you allow for Proactive Assistance is processed entirely in a private, encrypted space on your device,” which sounds like Magic Cue and Gemini Nano today.

The launch of the Pixel 11 would be the time for such a rebrand for the year-old Magic Cue. It’s not a big change in the grand scheme, especially with functionality staying the same, but does point to Google coalescing its assistive features on the Gemini brand rather than having Pixel pursue its own path. More broadly, this makes sense with the Gemini Intelligence initiative.
