The San Francisco Giants opened a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Friday after winning their previous series against the Athletics. Trevor McDonald got the start for San Francisco, but the Giants fell 3-1 in the series opener. McDonald was charged with his sixth loss of the season.

The Giants struck first, scoring in the opening inning when Rafael Devers lined an RBI double to give San Francisco an early 1-0 lead. That advantage didn't last long. Atlanta answered in the second inning as Dominic Smith delivered an RBI single to center field to tie the game at 1-1.

The Braves kept the pressure on in the third inning when Ozzie Albies drove in another run with an RBI single, giving Atlanta a 2-1 lead.Albies added to the Braves' advantage in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 3-1.McDonald finished his outing after pitching 5.

1 innings. He allowed seven hits, three earned runs, walked one, and struck out three while throwing 90 pitches, including 58 strikes.Overall, it was a solid outing for the right-hander, especially against one of the National League's better teams.

However, his lack of swing-and-miss stuff was evident as Atlanta consistently put the ball in play and collected seven hits. That's an area McDonald will need to continue improving.Matt Gage entered after McDonald recorded the first out of the sixth inning and delivered a clean frame.

He needed just 12 pitches to complete the inning and looked sharp in relief.Sam Hentges followed in the seventh, recording two outs before Adrian Houser retired the final batter of the inning. The bullpen continued its strong work from there, providing a positive response after struggling in the series finale against the Athletics, when it allowed the game to slip away.

Houser returned for the eighth and ninth innings, tossing two more scoreless frames. Since moving into the bullpen, he has shown he can effectively handle multiple innings. The offense, however, never found its rhythm.
