Four men were shot while trying to break up a fight between a man and a woman in San Francisco on Saturday, police said. The shooting happened just before 1 a.m.

on the corner of Mason and Market streets in the city’s downtown Tenderloin District, San Francisco police told SFGate. The men who were shot were trying to intervene in an altercation between a man and woman, both of whom were strangers to them. As the group of good Samaritans tried to stop the pair from arguing, the man pulled out a firearm and shot them, police said.

All four of the men were hospitalized with injuries, but are expected to survive. Bilal Mahmood, the supervisor of San Francisco’s District 5, which covers the neighborhood where the shooting unfolded, said on X Saturday that suspects had been identified, but no arrests were made yet. “I was present at the crime scene and spoke to officers on the scene,” Mahmood wrote. “Thanks to the actions of SFPD and RTIC, suspects have been identified.”

“We appreciate the swift actions of our first responders, and will be monitoring the situation as it develops,” he added. Authorities did not specify what the man and woman were arguing about when the incident unfolded.
