Former CVU standout seizes Day 1 lead at 2026 Vermont Amateur golf championship

Only one golfer finished in red, and another dropped an ace to highlight the first day of the 120th Vermont Amateur at Ekwanok Country Club on Tuesday, July 7.Alex Leonard, a 2021 Champlain Valley Union High School graduate, was the lone golfer to finish his opening round under par, firing a 69 to seize a one-stroke lead over 2024 Amateur champion Lucas Politano and Austin Giroux. Meanwhile, Nick Trottier holed the par 3 11th hole for the day's signature shot.
Evan Russell, a two-time Amateur winner, and Luke Russell are tied for fourth at 1-over.
