Eagles have a crowded WR competition behind DeVonta Smith
The Eagles have a crowded wide receiver competition behind DeVonta Smith, with Johnny Wilson among the names fighting for a roster spot.
The Philadelphia Eagles have one clear answer at wide receiver, and almost everything behind DeVonta Smith will be sorted out during training camp. That should make the position one of the most fascinating battles on the roster. With A.
J. Brown no longer in Philadelphia, Howie Roseman has built a crowded and intriguing group behind Smith, creating a competition that includes a first-round rookie, multiple offseason additions, a former starter trying to rebound, and several players fighting for what could be one final roster spot.Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia recently examined the depth chart and projected Smith, Makai Lemon, and Dontayvion Wicks as locks, with Hollywood Brown close to that status.
That would leave Elijah Moore, Johnny Wilson, Quez Watkins, Darius Cooper, Britain Covey, Danny Gray, and Samori Toure competing for limited space on the 53-man roster.Lemon should have a path to immediate snaps after Philadelphia traded up to land the Southern California wide receiver. Wicks has generated buzz after arriving via trade, and Brown gives the Eagles a vertical element after catching 49 passes for 587 yards and five touchdowns last season.
That group, along with Smith, gives Philadelphia a strong top four entering camp. The real battle comes after that. Moore has a strong production profile, averaging 50 catches for 541 yards from 2021 through 2024.
Watkins is back as a reclamation project with legitimate speed and a 647-yard season in 2021 on his résumé. Cooper showed promise in limited work last season, catching nine passes and producing six first downs on 11 targets. Covey still has punt return value, while Gray and Toure add more competition.
Wilson may be the most interesting name in the group because his skill set is different. The 6-foot-6 receiver was well regarded last summer before a significant camp injury, and his size, physicality, and blocking ability separate him from the rest of the room. He also averaged 23 snaps per game in 2024, four
