After nine years and two state championships at St. Mary's High School in Phoenix, Damin Lopez is resigning as basketball coach.

Mary's basketball community with The Arizona Republic on Monday, June 15. It said, "I have given my all to rebuilding the program and now I believe it is time to transition to a new challenge."Lopez steps down after nine years and two state championships at St.
Mary's. He led the Knights to the Open Division final this year, finishing runner-up to Sunnyslope. "St.
Mary's will always be special to me," Lopez added in the letter. "I am so grateful to have been a part of it. Thank you!

Mary's participated this past weekend in the Section 7 national showcase in the Valley, where the Knights went 1-3.Lopez didn't return a message from The Republic after sharing his resignation notice.The Knights graduated 7-foot McDonald's All-American Cameron Williams, who is now at Duke and was The Republic's Player of the Year last season.
The Knights still had a solid nucleus, led by guards Mick Riordan and Carter Bagley. Last week, 6-foot-5 wing Martray Bagley, the brother of NBA player Marvin Bagley III, transferred in from Glendale Dream City.Lopez was a part of St.
Mary's basketball for 21 years, serving as head coach for the last nine years. He helped out his father, Dave, when he was leading the Knights program. Dave Lopez led St.
Mary's to state titles in 2001 and 2009. Damin led St. Mary's to 4A state titles two seasons ago and in 2021.
Damin Lopez, who starred as a player at Glendale Apollo, was named both Arizona high school basketball Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.
