Dabo Swinney named one of the ‘most hated’ coaches in college football
Dabo Swinney spoke up and, in many ways was right, but the way he did it didn’t lead to a lot of love from the college football community
Dabo Swinney has never been one to shy away from sharing his views, even when he knows they’ll be unpopular. Whether it’s his opinions on NIL, the transfer portal or the changing landscape of college football, the Clemson head coach has consistently defended his beliefs, and those comments have helped make him one of the sport’s most divisive figures. That reputation showed up again this week when RotoWire released a list of college football’s “most hated” head coaches.
Swinney came in at No. 3 nationally, trailing only LSU’s Lane Kiffin and Colorado’s Deion Sanders. For Tigers fans, the ranking is unlikely to come as much of a surprise.
Swinney has built one of the nation’s winningest programs over the last decade while also becoming one of the loudest voices pushing back against many of the sport’s recent changes. His comments have drawn criticism from fans outside of Clemson, while others simply enjoy rooting against coaches who have spent years winning at a high level.RotoWire explained Swinney’s placement by pointing to both of those factors.
“He’s won big and then sermonizes about how he did it. The anti-transfer-portal, anti-NIL stances land as preachy in a sport that has moved on without him,” RotoWire said. “Not every villain is loud.
Dabo Swinney and Kirby Smart draw their share of national contempt simply by dominating – and, in Swinney’s case, by lecturing the sport about how he does it. Sustained excellence is one of the surest ways to make the rest of the country want to see you lose.”The outlet said its rankings weren’t simply based on social media reactions.
Instead, it combined online fan sentiment from Reddit, X and Facebook with responses from a 500-person survey.ACC schools ranked academically by U.S.
