Commanders' WR battle one of most interesting ahead of training camp

Washington's roster battle at wide receiver could be one of the NFL's best this summer, even without a certain someone.

Will the Washington Commanders make a big addition to their wide receiver corps before the 2026 season? That question has followed the Commanders since March after their unsuccessful attempts to sign free-agent receivers Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs. Washington did sign a pair of free agents, Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson.

It's a return home for Brown, who played his first four seasons with the Commanders before signing a one-year deal with the Jaguars last offseason. Brown had his best NFL season in 2024, coinciding with quarterback Jayden Daniels' record-breaking rookie season. The most important member of Washington's receiver room, Terry McLaurin, is back and completely healthy this offseason.

New offensive coordinator David Blough is on record saying he wants to get McLaurin at least 10 targets per game in 2026. That's great news. Another newcomer to Washington's WR room is rookie third-round pick, Antonio Williams.

The Commanders are excited about Williams, given his ability to play inside in the slot or outside. Also returning in 2026 are Treylon Burks, Luke McCaffrey, and Jaylin Lane. There is a lot of potential here, but, at least for now, a true standout No.

2 opposite McLaurin, which is why there has been so much talk surrounding the Commanders and Brandon Aiyuk, once the 49ers eventually release him. That potential, combined with the Aiyuk intrigue, is why ESPN's Ben Solak called Washington's wide receiver battle one of the 10 best in the NFL to watch in minicamps and training camp. Washington has struggled with WR depth behind Terry McLaurin for years now.

Last year's solution -- Deebo Samuel -- remains a free agent as the Commanders search for a more dynamic alternative. A free agent or trade (Brandon Aiyuk?) could still fill the spot, but the Commanders need someone to emerge from this smattering of veterans and recent middle-round picks.
