Christian Pulisic in race to be fit for USA’s World Cup clash with Australia as injury update issued
Christian Pulisic was taken off at halftime of USA’s win over Paraguay last Friday
Star forward Christian Pulisic continued individual training sessions on Tuesday as he battles a calf injury, casting uncertainty over his availability for the US men's national team's crucial World Cup clash against Australia on Friday.A team spokesman described Pulisic as "day to day" after his second straight day of individual workouts at the US training base in Orange County. His teammates, meanwhile, practiced fully as preparations intensified for the Seattle fixture.
Pulisic's limited appearance in the Americans' World Cup-opening 4-1 victory over Paraguay last Friday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, highlighted his vital role. The AC Milan forward was stellar, recording an assist on Folarin Balogun's first goal and causing an own-goal with his relentless playmaking from the left side of the US attack.Pochettino hopes Pulisic will be available against Australia (Reuters)The injury originated from a kick to the back of his left calf during training last week.
He was removed from the win over Paraguay at halftime due to stiffness, despite the US already leading 3-0 after their highest-scoring half in a World Cup match. Coach Mauricio Pochettino described the decision to shorten Pulisic's appearance as precautionary.Pulisic remained optimistic about his recovery after the match, stating: "I’m hoping I’ll be fine the next few days.
Just the back of my leg, sort of my calf area. I’m staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything."
Following their match against Australia in Seattle, the Americans are scheduled to return to Inglewood on 25 June to conclude their group stage play against Turkey.Australia beat Turkey 2-0 in their opening match, and are expected to provide the US with a stern test in a game that could determine who tops Group D.The US have never previously progressed beyond the round of 16 at the World Cup, but optimism is growing that the current team could make history following their dream start against Paraguay.
