Beijing's foreign ministry said Saturday that Wang made the call the previous day during talks with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of a foreign ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan. Wang said a memorandum of understanding(MOU) between the U.
S. and Iran was a "valuable outcome of mediation efforts by multiple parties" and that progress achieved through dialogue should not be abandoned. The minister said immediate priority would be to resolve differences through dialogue and resume implementation of the MOU, as he expressed Beijing's intent to support mediation efforts by Pakistan and others and properly address issues regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi said his country remains open to negotiation and does not wish to see the conflict continue, while urging the U.S. to honor its commitments under the deal, exercise restraint, and seek a reasonable solution.
