Chargers' Charlie Kolar named breakout player ahead of 2026 season
Los Angeles Chargers' offseason addition and tight end, Charlie Kolar, has been named as the team’s breakout candidate ahead of the upcoming season.
The Chargers are heading into the 2026 season with high hopes, especially after a successful offseason. The Bolts have revamped their offense in a big way, upgrading their roster around Justin Herbert. Los Angeles has made some notable changes to its team and roster, but one that may prove to be vital is the addition of tight end Charlie Kolar.
Kolar, who signed with the Chargers on a three-year, $24.3 million deal this offseason, has been tagged as the team's breakout player in 2026. Daniel Popper of The Athletic named Kolar as one to watch as he is set for a career year.
"The Chargers made Kolar a priority addition during free agency, signing the former Raven to a three-year, $24.3 million deal. Kolar was an elite run blocker in Baltimore and will continue to fill that role for the Chargers.
Kolar also has a ton of untapped potential as a pass catcher, and that is where the breakout could happen in Los Angeles. Kolar was playing behind Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely with the Ravens. He will get more opportunities in the passing game for the Chargers.
Kolar has never caught more than 10 passes in a season. His career high in receiving yards is 142. Kolar is poised to surpass those figures handily in 2026."
Kolar, 27, is expected to play a dual-threat role for Mike McDaniel. The former Oklahoma native has established himself as an elite blocker; however, Kolar is set to see an uptick in production. He has the tools and is in an offense that he could succeed in.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 265 pounds, Kolar provides physicality and is a mismatch target in the passing game, especially on bootleg concepts. Last season as a member of the Ravens, Kolar recorded career highs in receptions (10) and yards (142). In his expanded role with the Chargers, those numbers are expected to skyrocket.
Kolar will be a versatile piece in McDaniel's heavy "12" and "13" personnel packages. This article originally appeared on Chargers Wire: Chargers' Charlie Kolar named breakout pla
