For years, July 4 was celebrated as Philippine Independence Day, commemorating Washington’s formal recognition of sovereignty in 1946.

The 1962 shift to June 12 reclaimed the revolutionary heritage of the anti-colonial struggle, yet July 4 endures as a testament to America’s deep imprint on Manila’s foreign and security policy. The date resonates still, underscoring both the benefits of alliance and the persistent challenge of asserting strategic autonomy amid competing great powers. Commemorating Philippine–American Friendship Day lays bare the endurance of United States’ influence long after formal independence.

From the Mutual Defense Treaty (1951) to the Visiting Forces Agreement (1999), and later the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (2014) with its 2023 expansion, Washington has decisively shaped Manila’s security posture and diplomatic choices. The American presence has been so pervasive that Philippine foreign policy often reads less as sovereign calculation than as reflexive alignment with alliance obligations. Has friendship become dependency?

Has sovereignty been compromised by overreliance? Article continues after this advertisement Benefits of Philippine-American security alliance are, indeed, undeniable. American security guarantees have provided deterrence against external threats, military assistance in times of crisis, and access to advanced defense technology.

Our legal and diplomatic strategies in the South China Sea, including the 2016 arbitral victory, were heavily influenced by Washington’s broader Indo-Pacific agenda. Such alignment can reduce Philippine sovereignty to a derivative of US grand strategy, where national interests are subsumed under alliance imperatives.

It is paramount, therefore, for the Philippines to pursue strategic autonomy, a constitutionally mandated independent foreign policy that resists domination by any single power while engaging all others on terms that serve Filipino national interests. Diversifying security partnerships is essential. While the US alliance remains important, Manila must deepen defense cooperation with Asean neighbors, Japan, South Korea, India, and European partners.

A web of multiple partnerships creates resilience, ensuring that no single power can dictate the nation’s security posture. It also an urgent task to stabilize relations with China. At present, China’s rise has become a reality that cannot be ignored, and engagement must be carefully managed.

Economic and cultural exchanges should continue, but maritime rights in the South China Sea must be firmly pursued. Dialogue, legal instruments, and confidence-building measures can temper rivalry without surrendering sovereignty. Stabilizing ties with Beijing is necessary not only for bilateral peace but also for regional stability, while simultaneously engaging other major powers to prevent overdependence on single actor.

Transparency laws requiring disclosure of foreign affiliations, stronger oversight of defense agreements, and the empowerment of independent think tanks can help ensure that Philippine foreign policy decisions are made in the national interest rather than as extensions of external agendas. Building robust institutions one way to insulate policy from manipulation.

Finally, strategic autonomy is hollow without economic strength. The Philippines must invest in infrastructure, technology, and human capital to reduce vulnerability to external pressures. Economic resilience allows Manila to negotiate from a position of confidence, making it less susceptible to coercion or dependency.

A strong economy is the foundation of a strong foreign policy. Philippine–American Friendship Day is not only a celebration of shared history but an invitation for critical reflection. Friendship must not mean dependence, and sovereignty must not be compromised by alliance.

Continuing to rely excessively on Washington can perpetuate dependency, while turning blindly to Beijing can compromise sovereignty. Article continues after this advertisement Philippine strategic autonomy demands genuine independence by engaging other major powers, stabilizing relations with China, and cultivating a foreign policy that is neither pro-US nor pro-China, but resolutely pro-Filipino. In this light, Philippine–American Friendship Day endures not merely as a comm
