A California couple has discovered $17,450 missing from their Chase checking account after an ATM visit revealed the fraud. The couple found three fake checks totaling around $6,450 and 17 fraudulent online bill payments adding up to over $11,000 on their statement, reports ABC7. The pair had recently ordered new checks from a third-party printing company, which appears to have exposed their account details through the mailed voided check.
They rushed to the bank the next day to close the account after seeing the suspicious transactions, including payments to Verizon Wireless and credit cards not theirs. The bank initially provided limited information on how the fraud occurred and required proof for some claims, leading to frustration over denied access to other banks for verification. ABC7’s 7 On Your Side investigated and helped recover the full amount after Chase refunded the checks promptly but needed documentation for the rest.
