Share Add us on Google by Editorial Team Jul. 29, 2026 Bloomberg LP is buying Canoe Intelligence, the AI-driven platform that automates private markets data collection and delivery. The acquisition, announced on July 29, was not exactly a surprise given the two companies had already been working together through a certified integration that went live back in April.
Here’s the thing: private markets are massive, estimated somewhere between $15 trillion and $22 trillion in total value, and yet the data infrastructure supporting them looks like it belongs in the early 2000s. Bloomberg is betting that bolting Canoe’s automation capabilities onto its existing terminal empire will change that. What Bloomberg is actually buying Canoe Intelligence is not some scrappy startup operating out of a garage.
The platform processes more than 1.5 million documents every month across over 44,000 funds. Its client roster includes more than 500 institutional investors that collectively manage over $11 trillion in assets.
Think pension funds, endowments, and asset managers who currently deal with private fund reporting the way most people deal with tax season: grudgingly and with a lot of manual data entry. Advertisement Canoe’s AI does the tedious part, extracting and structuring data from capital account statements, distribution notices, and other private fund documents that traditionally required armies of analysts to process. In English: it turns PDFs into usable data.
The company had previously raised $72.8 million from investors that include Goldman Sachs and Blackstone. The deal is still subject to customary regulatory approval, and no financial terms were disclosed.
Why this matters for Bloomberg’s bigger play Bloomberg’s existing database already covers more than 3 million private companies, 50,000 private funds, and 16,000 private direct loans. Adding Canoe’s document-processing engine fills a gap that has been quietly annoying institutional investors for years: the inability to get a single, unified view of both public and private holdings. The two companies had already built a certified integration with Bloomberg PORT Enterprise that went live on April 8.
That integration automated private fund data flows directly into Bloomberg’s portfolio analytics platform. The acquisition essentially takes that partnership and makes it permanent. For context, public markets data has been structured, searchable, and instantly accessible for decades.
Private markets data, by contrast, still arrives in formats that range from inconsistent to incomprehensible. Capital call notices from one fund look nothing like those from another. Performance metrics are reported on different timelines with different methodologies.
The crypto and alternative asset angle No cryptocurrencies or digital tokens were mentioned in connection with this acquisition. But the deal has meaningful implications for how institutional capital interacts with alternative assets broadly, a category that increasingly includes digital asset funds and crypto-adjacent investment vehicles. Bloomberg’s terminal is already a primary data source for institutional crypto market data.
Adding comprehensive private fund analytics makes its platform stickier for the exact type of institutional investor that has been gradually increasing crypto allocations. The acquisition also sends a signal to competitors. Firms like MSCI, S&P Global, and various fintech startups offering private markets analytics now have to contend with Bloomberg bundling AI-powered document processing into its existing terminal ecosystem.
