Berlin attack is a ‘very real reminder’ of why Pride is still needed, say heartbroken community

When a suspected terrorist drove into crowds in Berlin, it was a ‘very real reminder’ of why Pride is still so important to communities, according to organisers at one of the key events around the world this weekend. The German capital was one of many cities transformed into a sea of rainbow celebrations for the LGBTQ+ community and allies over the past few weeks. And the impact of the attack, which killed one and injured up to 29 others, was to reinforce the core mission of Pride, which is not just a celebration, but about visibility, safety and solidarity for gay people.

‘While we came together in solidarity yesterday, our community was under attack in Berlin,’ wrote organisers of Folkestone Pride in Kent, where thousands were also celebrating on Saturday. ‘We are devastated for the person killed, those injured and all who have been affected. The impact of such a horrific act is felt throughout our entire community.

“As we reflect on this tragedy alongside moments of solidarity and togetherness both locally and afar, let it be a reminder of the power and importance of connection, unity and visibility. We are stronger together.”A vigil is taking place in Germany on Sunday evening for those killed, injured and impacted by the incident in the Tiergarten park area of Berlin.

German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said: “I want to say this to those taking part in Christopher Street Day here in Berlin, and indeed across the whole of Germany: do not let yourselves – let us not – be intimidated.”Devastated crowds gather at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin for a demonstration in support of the LGBTQ+ community (AP)Newcastle Pride came together on Sunday and also organised a candlelit vigil for the victims in Berlin. In a statement, they said: “We are heartbroken to read the news of the tragic events at Berlin Pride.

Pride is about joy, community and the freedom to exist without fear. We are sending love, strength and solidarity to the victims, their families and everyone in Berlin. Sadly it is a very real reminder of why Pride is still needed.”

Ella’s global community, which represents queer women + non-binary people, echoed those statements. “One day after celebrating Pride, we're reminded why Pride still matters. Berlin Pride (Christopher Street Day) ended in tragedy after a vehicle drove into the crowd near the closing celebrations,” the organisation wrote in a social media post.”

Today, our thoughts are with the victims, their families and everyone affected. Pride has always been more than a celebration.“It is about visibility.

It is about safety. It is about standing together.“Berlin, we stand with you.”

Brighton Pride, the UK’s largest pride event taking place next weekend, said: “We are deeply saddened by the attack in Berlin. We stand in solidarity with the Berlin LGBTQ+ community. This is why we march for our rights.

Pride should be a place of celebration and joy. Brighton stands with Berlin.”German authorities launched a manhunt for the suspect, named as Abdul B.

Berlin Police said on Sunday evening he had been shot dead on the outskirts of Berlin. The Independent’s Pride List 2026 was published last month and celebrates the work and achievements of British individuals within the LGBTQ+ community .
