The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the quarry accident on the outskirts of Bengaluru that claimed the lives of seven workers and left five others injured after a granite boulder fell on them on July 2. The incident occurred at a stone quarry in Hulikenahalli village at Tavarekere Hobli, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, when the workers had just begun work at around 7.30 a.
m. NHRC has issued a notice to the Karnataka Chief Secretary, directing the State government to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The commission registered a suo motu case based on media reports, observing that the incident appears to indicate negligence on the part of the quarry owner.
In a statement issued on Monday (July 6), the NHRC said that if the contents of the media reports are found to be true, the incident would amount to a serious violation of the victims’ human rights.
