Greek$$$$ At first glance, Athos looks like your classic Melbourne cafe: tables spilling onto the footpath, Lycra-clad locals grabbing coffee, and a cabinet stacked with salads and pastries.

But step inside, and you’ll find a kitchen fiercely loyal to old-school Greek cooking – think pastichio layered with pasta, beef and bechamel, and slow-cooked rabbit stifado straight from the family recipe book. Beyond the daytime treats, they’re keeping the lights on for Friday dinners, and are now warming up for Monday nights. Best for: Golden spanakopita made from scratch by the former owners of Moonee Ponds institution Philhellene.
