Assassin's Creed Shadows' final update adds one last story mission and a wearable Black Flag Resynced advert

Mostly decent open-world ninja sim Assassin’s Creed Shadows is getting its last big update today, as Ubisoft begin the process of shooing players away from the year-old RPG and towards the gleaming, nipple-adding newness of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. The Shadows patch even includes an unlockable outfit based on Edward Kenway’s pirate garb, displaced only 150 or so years out of its appropriate time period for your synergistic brand awareness pleasure. Assassin's Creed Shadows: Last Content Drop Update Watch on YouTube The update’s meatier contents come in the form of a concluding story mission, Black Tides, in which a pair of high-ranking Templar types arrive in Japan for one final attempt on the lives of dual protagonists Naoe and Yasuke.

There’s also a new endgame challenge mode, Domains, which’ll drop you in extra-tricky Animus arenas built to "push you out of your comfort zone and rethink your loadouts." There’s some unique gear in it for those who undergo sufficient loadout-rethinking, including a hatchet that looks suspiciously straight out of Assassin’s Creed III. Maybe they’ll remake that one next.

The Black Flag Resynced crossover is at least a tit-for-tat deal: progressing through the rewards tree in Shadows will also unlock some Japan-themed gear you can eventually use in Black Flag Resynced, should you pick it up next month, including some equally silly ninja and samurai outfits to skulk around the Caribbean in. Unfortunately, associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois pitches this system in the above video with the phrase "You get to work towards those rewards," a series of words that should probably never exist in that specific order. The update’s out today, June 16th, at 3pm BST / 10am EST / 7am PST.

Black Flag Resynced is releasing on July 9th, hopefully after fixing the wonkiness that Julian found in his (not entirely areola-centred) preview. While neither Shadows’ nor Black Flag Resync’s lead studios, respectively Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Singapore, are seemingly affected, this update also comes days after Ubisoft reportedly chose to close down their Winnipeg and Belgrade studios while significantly restructuring Ubisoft Barcelona. That in turn followed just months after another major round of layoffs and game cancellations that prompted strike action from unionised Ubi staff.
