Asia’s AI race won’t be won by capital or talent, but by whoever can keep the lights on

Every conversation about Asia’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) race is often framed around the same topics: capital, compute, talent, and policy ambition. But the next phase of the region’s digital growth will also be shaped by a more fundamental constraint: power. This is why governments across Asia are advancing digital economy roadmaps, hyperscalers are expanding cloud infrastructure, and enterprises are accelerating AI adoption.

The demand side of the equation is sorted. With that, the question has now flipped entirely: can markets actually deliver the energy infrastructure to support what’s being built? This is precisely why a robust energy strategy is no longer just a back-end operational issue, and should sit at the heart of a market’s growth agenda.

Where reliable, scalable, and increasingly sustainable power exists, data centres will be built, and AI-led growth will follow. Where it doesn’t, growth will inevitably stagnate. Asia’s AI boom is hitting a physical wall The numbers tell a clear story, and Asia is emerging as one of the most important growth frontiers for AI.

In the third quarter of 2024, investment in APAC data centres more than doubled year-on-year to US$2.8 billion, according to JLL’s Capital Tracker. Additionally, 60 per cent of enterprise IT infrastructure spending in the region expected to go towards shared cloud environments by 2028, highlighting the scale of cloud adoption.

These numbers underscore key regional trends, with governments investing in digital transformation, businesses embedding AI into their operating models, data sovereignty, and cloud demand continuing to rise across both developed and emerging markets. However, beneath this momentum lies a more immediate challenge, as the physical infrastructure needed to support digital expansion comes under significant strain. So, whilst the capital is flowing, the question to ask is if it is flowing into markets that can actually power what’s being built?

Here’s the reality: data centre
