Art against drugs in city colleges

A city-wide campaign through art is mobilising students at colleges and schools to speak up about the dangers of substance abuse. Initiated by art and craft brand Fevicryl, the initiative launched recently has Fevicrly-certified teachers visiting institutions to conduct an art session where students use their creativity to create meaningful works on the theme of drug awareness. The sessions are aimed at encouraging creativity, building teamwork, promoting social responsibility and creating awareness for a drug-free society.

Tejaswitha Singh, a resident of Adyar who is driving the initiative in south Chennai, says, “All what we ask institutions is give them two hours and at least 200 students and we engage with them to use art to create awareness.” The materials for the artworks have to be arranged by the students that includes canvas board, markers and other stationery.A team of three would be assigned to every institution where they are also involved in colouring a 6ft x 3 ft banner with colourful messages.

Besides being a Fevicrly certified trainer, Tejaswitha works as a guest lecturer in fashion designing. She says there are close to 150 such certified teachers in Chennai and they are fanning out to institutions in their respective areas to increase participation in this initiative.By researching about drugs and its side effects to send out a message on canvas, the initiative nudges students to recognise behavioural signs and be allies with the State Government in combating the scourge of drug abuse.
