A Veteran Takes Up Trucking in His 60s. The New Paycheck Can Grow His Social Security, or Shrink It, Depending on One Thing.

Quick Read Reaching Full Retirement Age (67) eliminates Social Security's earnings test, letting veteran truck drivers earn unlimited wages without losing a dollar of benefits. A strong trucking year earning $60,000 can replace a zero in the 35-year benefit calculation, permanently adding up to $30 monthly, compounding with each COLA. Military pensions stack cleanly on Social Security with no WEP penalty, but combined income can push up to 85% of benefits into federal taxable territory.
Two retirees, same $1 million, same 4% rule, buy one finished with $1.4 million, the other hit $0 in 12 years. Our free reader guide explains the flaw that separated them, and the income-first method built to avoid it.
A retired Army sergeant in his early 60s spent 22 years in uniform, drew a modest military pension, and thought he was done with alarm clocks. Then a truck-driving school starts running ads targeting veterans, and suddenly he is behind the wheel of a Class 8 tractor pulling freight up I-81. He is not alone.
Veterans drive commercial trucks at roughly twice the rate of the overall workforce, and about one in 10 U.S. truck drivers is a veteran, a stat that has drawn fresh attention as the industry recruits from military ranks.
dell640 / Getty Images The financial question these new drivers ask on retirement forums almost always sounds the same: if I take this job, will I lose my Social Security? The paycheck can shrink his monthly benefit, grow it, or both, and which one depends almost entirely on a single fact about him. The One Thing That Decides Everything: Has He Reached Full Retirement Age?
For anyone born in 1960 or later, Full Retirement Age (FRA) is 67. That single milestone flips the rules on working while collecting. The 4% Rule is Broken, Built On A World That No Longer Exists Every retiree knows about the 4% rule, but it frames retirement as a slow liquidation and still causes retirees with seven-figure accounts to agonize over a dinner out.
There's a different way to run the math that makes more sense today. Build an income floor — dividends, interest, and Social Security that cover your essential bills every month — and you never have to sell shares into a down market just to pay them. Our free reader guide, The 4% Rule Is Broken, walks through it in about 15 minutes.
Access the report here. Before FRA: if he has already claimed Social Security and keeps working, the earnings test kicks in. In 2026, the Social Security Administration withholds $1 in benefits for every $2 earned above the annual limit for workers under FRA all year, and $1 for every $3 above a higher limit in the year he reaches FRA.
A rookie over-the-road driver can clear the lower limit in a few months. The median heavy-truck driver earns about $57,440 a year, or roughly $1,105 a week, but experienced drivers on premium long-haul routes can push well past $1,500 a week, comfortably enough to trigger the earnings test either way. Story Continues After FRA, the earnings test disappears entirely.
He can pull $80,000 hauling reefer loads and not a dollar of his benefit is withheld. Benefits withheld under the earnings test come back. Once he hits FRA, Social Security recomputes his monthly check upward to make up for the months that were held back.
Over an average lifespan, he gets most of it back. It still hurts cash flow in the near term, which matters when financing a truck lease. The Silent Bonus: New Earnings Can Permanently Raise His Benefit Social Security bases his check on the highest 35 years of wage-indexed earnings.
If his record contains any zeros, common for someone who served on a modest E-6 salary in the 1980s, a strong trucking year can knock out a weak one. That triggers an automatic recomputation and a modestly higher benefit for life, indexed by the annual COLA, which is 2.8% for 2026.
For a benefit near the national average, replacing a zero year with a $60,000 trucking year typically adds a few dollars to $30 or so per month, depending on where his lifetime earnings fall on the progressive formula. That is not the number that changes his retirement. But it is permanent, it compounds with every future COLA, and it costs him nothing beyond the work he is already doing.
How It Fits With the Military Pension and the Rest Military pay has been fully covered by Social Security since 1957, so there is no Windfall Elimination Provision haircut to worry about. His military pension stacks cleanly on top of Social Security. VA disability compensation does not count as earned income for the earnings test.
What does count against him is taxes. Once combined income (pension, half of Social Security, and trucking wages) clears the thresholds, up to 85% of his benefit becomes taxable at the federal level. A big trucking year can quietly push more of his check into taxable territory even after the earnings test stops applying.
Before signing the offer letter, pull his earnings record at ssa.gov to see what years the new wages wou
