여의도 15배 빙산이 막았다… 황제펭귄 새끼 69% 사라진 이유
황제펭귄 수만 마리가 모여 새끼를 키우는 남극 로스해의 쿨먼섬. 먹이가 풍부하고 바다 얼음도 비교적 안정적이어서 세계 최대 규모의 황제펭귄 번식지 가운데 하나로 꼽힌다. 해마다 2만마리 안팎의 새끼가 자라던 이곳에 지난해 뜻밖의 장벽이 나타났다. 길이 13.9㎞에 이르는 거대한 빙산이 번식지 앞바다에 멈춰 서면서 부모 펭귄들이 먹이를 구하러 오가는 길을 가로막은 것이다. 그해 확인된 새끼는 6658마리로, 1년 전보다 69%나 줄었다.
